Recently, I was chosen to be on a “Dream Team” of top notch Bible Scholars to defend a client who discovered that her pastor had been taking tithes from her for several years under the color of “official right”, even though the Word of God reveals that she was never required to tithe her money to the Church from the beginning.
Does she have a case? Is her request to be compensated restitution of all tithe money justified?
Since I am on the “Dream Team”, I must go to the Book of the Law to see what it says concerning stealing and restitution… I must then take appropriate action if the pastor has stolen from my client by relying on what is written in the Law in order to practice his deceit.
Before going to the Law, let us look at what the Apostle Paul said concerning those who are under the Law, shall we?
Galatians 3:10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.
From the above verse, we can determine that the pastor who has relied on the Law, “The tithes of the land are the Lord’s”, must also submit to the remaining 612 ordinances contained in that Law.
That fact established, let us now go to the Law books to see what they say about restitution, shall we?
Numbers 5:6 Speak unto the children of Israel, When a man or woman shall commit any sin that men commit, to do a trespass against the LORD, and that person be guilty;
Numbers 5:7 Then they shall confess their sin which they have done: and he shall recompense his trespass with the principal thereof, and add unto it the fifth part thereof, and give it unto him against whom he hath trespassed.
According to these verses found in the very Law that the pastor used to extort money from his my client, and since Leviticus 27:30-33 identifies God’s holy tithes as agricultural, not monetary, it is safe to say the pastor does indeed owe my client whom he has robbed, restitution… He must repay all money he received from my client, and an additional 20% profit to that which was stolen by him.
So, if my client gave $10,000 in tithes over the last five years and just realized that her pastor was deceitful and not eligible to receive tithes and that tithes were not money anyway, because of his defrauding her he is required by the very Law he uses deceitfully to give her $10,000 back and a $2,000 addition to that amount.
Defense rests.
