For most of my adult life, I have heard pastors preach on God's Holy tithe at least once every year. Sometimes twice
But never in all my years of being preached to that "God expects His children to tithe to the Church" have I ever heard what Nehemiah says about the Temple tithe coming from the pulpit.
In Nehemiah 10:37-38, we read:
And that we should bring the firstfruits of our dough, and our offerings, and the fruit of all manner of trees, of wine and of oil, unto the priests, to the chambers of the house of our God; and the tithes of our ground unto the Levites, that the same Levites might have the tithes in all the cities of our tillage. And the priest the son of Aaron shall be with the Levites, when the Levites take tithes: and the Levites shall bring up the tithe of the tithes unto the house of our God, to the chambers, into the treasure house.
If I understand the Word of God correctly, the tithe of the children of Israel did not go to the Temple. Instead, it went to the Levites in their Levitical cities. The Priest would be with the Levites when they received the tithe of the children of Israel to oversee the receiving of the tithe. The Levite would then take a tithe of the tithe he received to the storehouse in Jerusalem.
That's right! The children of Israel, the congregation, did not tithe to the Temple at all. It was only the Levites who tithed to the Temple. The Levite brought 1% of the total produce of all Israel to the Temple. They kept the remainder of the tithe they received from the children of Israel to sustain them in their homes during their time away from the Temple.
How can a pastor claim that God requires 10% of the Church members' money as a tithe when God only required 1% of Israel's produce to be taken to the Temple storehouse chambers under the Law.
It is clear that pastors today put a greater burden upon the child of God than God Himself does.
